Dry eye syndrome is a disorder of the tear film due to tear deficiency, excessive evaporation or tears of poor quality. It can cause damage to the exposed surface of the eye from mild to severe and permanent. Symptoms of dry eye include burning, stinging, itching, foreign body sensation (a feeling like something is stuck under the lid), excessive tearing and light sensitivity.
Causes of dry eye syndrome include the following:
Aging
Hormonal changes
Medications
Systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
Environmental issues such as excessive computer use or working in dry, windy, or dusty conditions
Long term contact lens wear
Eyelid inflammation and infection
Dry eye syndrome is a chronic condition that usually cannot be cured, however, the symptoms and potential damage to the surface can be treated. Treatments include artificial tear lubricating drops, drops to increase natural tear production, treatment of eyelid disease or closing the tear drainage ducts with temporary or permanent plugs.
