Boston Keratoprosthesis

Patients with severe corneal diseases or who have had multiple corneal transplant failures may not be adequate candidates for standard corneal surgery. In these situations an alternative is an “artificial cornea” called the Boston Keratoprosthesis. It is a clear plastic device developed (FDA approved in 1992) to eliminate the chance of the body rejecting the transplant. It is a last resort for those patients with corneal blindness who have failed traditional methods of treatment. A complete evaluation by your surgeon is required to establish candidacy.

Boston KeraPost- operative care requires topical and oral medications and a bandage contact lens. It is well tolerated in the majority of patients and often returns functional vision to a once blind eye.
